PERIOD.

Unnerving, unsurprising, unexpected, unsettling… and unavoidable.

There’s a mass of stories, ranging from the hilarious to the heart-breaking, that aren’t told often enough. These stories are captivating, and when we tell them we dismantle taboos and support young people who might be going through something needlessly traumatic.

PERIOD. is a series of animated shorts about people’s first periods. Through first-person narratives and impactful animation, they capture diverse experiences and contexts – variously funny, traumatic, poignant and surprising.

BACKGROUND

A study from the UK revealed that 60% of girls felt scared when they got their first period and 58% were embarrassed. 50% were so embarrassed they didn’t tell anyone about it. Scarier still – 44% of girls did not know what was happening to them.

Now, this study is 8 years old and things are getting better constantly, but a lot of girls – and women for that matter – still find periods embarrassing. And maybe it is not so strange as it is uncontrollable.

And, the fact that the boys in the classroom don’t get it, and possibly don’t know what it is – doesn’t make it easier. We need to change this and we need to make periods easier to talk about.

Also. There are A LOT of stories! Something like 3 billion people has a story about their first menstruation, yet these stories are seldom told.

PERIOD. is about telling these stories. But not in a boring, educational way, but in a funny, embarrassing, heartfelt, but above all – hard-to-believe and exciting way. It is basically just short fun, sharable stories – that just happens to be about getting your period.

WHY ANIMATION?

Animation can help us to make the stories compelling for our target audience. They will enhance the storytelling by making some situations easier to understand and by deepening their emotional resonance. They will help us to control the tone and intensity of the stories, so that they reflect the participants’ narratives while still being suitable for the target audience.

It’s an approach that also makes it relatively simple to translate the films to other languages, increasing the projects’ reach.
